Columbia/Lafayette County Conservation Districts Contest
Over 120 Arkansas students competed in the annual Judging Contest hosted by the Columbia and Lafayette County Conservation Districts held at the Columbia County Fairgrounds on Friday, February 7, 2020. Seventeen schools brought Forestry and Land teams. Engraved wood plaques from Genoa Central FFA and customized clipboards designed by Laura Blakely were presented to the three highest scoring teams and individuals. After the contest, students, teachers, and volunteers were treated to lunch sponsored by Columbia County Farm Bureau and Farm Credit of Western Arkansas.
In the Forestry Judging Contest, Harmony Grove placed first with Hermitage placing second and Taylor placing third. Hope Cheatham from Harmony Grove was the High Point Individual for the Forestry Judging Contest with Madison McGhee, Hermitage, placing second and Beau Emerson, Taylor, and Alan McGhee, Hermitage, being tied for third. In the Land Judging Contest, Taylor placed first with Dierks Team 2 placing second and Dierks Team 1 placing third. Braxton McGhee from Ouachita and Kaden Helms from Dierks tied for the High Point Individual for the Land Judging Contest with Jaden Smith, Foreman, placing second and Garrett Ingle, Taylor, placing third.
Along with Columbia County Farm Bureau and Farm Credit of Western Arkansas, we would like to thank Southern Arkansas University, the Columbia County Fair Association, and the many volunteers from surrounding Conservation Districts and the Natural Resources Conservation Service for their support.
The Columbia County Conservation District is governed by a board of five Columbia County landowners who are familiar with the conservation challenges in Columbia County. The District’s objectives are to focus attention on land and water resource problems, to develop programs to resolve these problems, and to coordinate the efforts of individuals, agencies, organizations, and institutions with conservation interests. The Board of Directors meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 8:00 a.m. in the conference room at Story Arena. All meetings are open to the public.
